IGTV was Instagram's attempt at a long-form video platform — videos up to an hour long, vertical-first format, originally given its own dedicated tab. Instagram has since folded IGTV into the main video feed (now just called "Video posts"), but the long-form content from IGTV's era is still on the platform and accessible.

What "IGTV" actually means today

Instagram retired IGTV as a separate brand around 2022 but kept all the long-form content accessible. What used to be called IGTV is now just "video posts" — Instagram videos longer than 60 seconds. The URL format and download approach are identical to regular Instagram videos.
If you have an old IGTV URL (often something like instagram.com/tv/...), it still works. Newer long-form posts use instagram.com/p/... like all Instagram content.

Downloading on Desktop

  1. Open the post in your browser. URLs look like instagram.com/p/POSTID/ or instagram.com/tv/POSTID/.
  2. Copy the URL from the address bar.

IGTV-format videos are usually 1080p vertical (9:16) or sometimes landscape (16:9). File sizes scale with length:

  • 30-minute video: ~400-500 MB.
  • Hour-long video: ~800 MB-1.2 GB.

Many IGTV-era videos are essentially podcasts — extended interviews, conversations, monologues. Instagram's video format isn't ideal for audio-only consumption, but the content often deserves it.
