Mixcloud is the platform DJs and radio show hosts use to share long-form music sets — typically 1-3 hour mixes covering everything from house to drum and bass to ambient to global music. Unlike Spotify, Mixcloud handles the royalties for music played in the mixes, which is why DJs can post sets containing dozens of copyrighted tracks legally. The platform offers offline listening through a paid Mixcloud Pro subscription. For free users, there's no native download.

Why download Mixcloud mixes?

A few practical reasons many DJs and music fans build local Mixcloud libraries:

  • Long-form listening. A 2-hour DJ set is too long for casual streaming attention spans. Saved as MP3, you can listen during long commutes, workouts, road trips.
  • Mixes disappear. Mixcloud doesn't auto-delete, but DJs sometimes remove sets — for legal reasons, rebranding, or simply moving platforms.
  • No internet listening. Planes, hikes, gym basements where reception fails.
  • DJ research. DJs studying other DJs benefit from local files they can scrub through and reference.

Downloading on Desktop

  1. Open the Mixcloud mix in your browser. URLs look like mixcloud.com/UserName/mix-title/.
  2. Copy the URL.
  3. Go to savefast.cc, paste, click Download.
  4. Pick MP3.
  5. File saves to Downloads.

Mixcloud mixes are typically 100-300 MB depending on length and bitrate.

Downloading on Mobile

iPhone: In the Mixcloud app, tap the share icon on the mix → Copy link. Open Safari → SaveFast → paste → download → Save to Files. The MP3 plays in Files itself, or you can move it to your podcast/music app.
Android: Same flow in Chrome. The MP3 ends up in Downloads and is playable by any audio app.

Quality available

Mixcloud streams at:

  • 64-128 kbps for some older mixes.
  • 160-256 kbps for most modern uploads.
  • 320 kbps for Pro creator uploads.

Download quality matches what Mixcloud streams — you can't get a higher bitrate than what was uploaded.
For DJ-quality archival, 256-320 kbps is enough for casual listening. Audiophile DJs sometimes go straight to the source (asking the DJ for the lossless file) for proper crate-building.

How Mixcloud differs from SoundCloud and Bandcamp

Three key differences for downloaders:

  • Mixcloud is mix/set focused. Most content is 1-3 hour DJ sets or radio shows. SoundCloud has tracks; Bandcamp has albums.
  • Mixcloud handles music licensing. This means DJs can legally post mixes with major-label tracks. SoundCloud has to strip copyrighted tracks; Bandcamp is artist-owned originals only.
  • No artist control over individual track downloads. Mixcloud doesn't offer downloads of individual tracks within mixes — the mix is the unit.

Tracklist information

Most mixes have tracklists posted by the DJ in the mix description. When you download:

  1. Save the MP3.
  2. Copy the tracklist from the Mixcloud page (Description tab).
  3. Save the tracklist as a text file next to your MP3.

This lets you identify any track that catches your ear during listening — extremely useful for music discovery.
Some DJs don't share full tracklists (especially for new mixes or where they're keeping IDs secret). The mix itself often plays tracklist info aloud or has video overlays in some cases.

Pro Mixcloud subscription

Mixcloud has a paid "Mixcloud Select" tier that supports DJs and gives subscribers offline listening through the official Mixcloud app. If you regularly listen to specific DJs, subscribing to their Select page is the most direct way to support them — Mixcloud pays subscriptions through to the DJ.
SaveFast downloads don't go through this support flow. For artists you love, consider supporting through Select directly.

Common issues

"Mix not available in your region." Mixcloud occasionally has licensing-driven geo-restrictions. VPN bypasses.
"This mix is for subscribers only." Some Mixcloud Select content is paywalled. Not downloadable without subscription.
Audio cuts out mid-mix. Rare, but happens with very old mixes where the audio file was truncated. Re-downloading sometimes helps.
File size is huge. A 3-hour 256kbps mix is roughly 350 MB. Plan storage accordingly.

Privacy and DJ support

Downloads are invisible to Mixcloud's analytics. The DJ's play count is unaffected.
This matters: DJs on Mixcloud get partial revenue based on plays. Listening through the app or web (which counts as a play) supports the DJ; downloaded MP3 listening doesn't. For DJs you love and listen to regularly, opening the page occasionally — or subscribing to Select — is meaningful.
For commercial use (using a Mixcloud mix in a video, podcast, or other content), you'd need permission from both the DJ and the rights holders of every track in the mix. This is complex; usually not worth pursuing for downloads.

Frequently asked questions

Is downloading Mixcloud mixes legal?
The gray area. Mixcloud paid the rights to stream the music in mixes — that doesn't necessarily extend to allowing third-party downloads. For personal use, enforcement is minimal. For redistribution, you're definitely in violation.
Will the DJ know I downloaded their mix?
No. Downloads bypass play counts and analytics.
Can I download Mixcloud Select premium content?
Only if you're a paying subscriber for that page. Otherwise it's gated.
Does this work for podcast-style content on Mixcloud?
Yes — talk shows, interviews, and other podcast-format content on Mixcloud downloads as MP3 the same way.
Can I extract individual tracks from a mix?
No — the mix is one continuous audio file. Identifying tracks by Shazam or similar audio recognition works for finding what's playing, but you can't auto-split a mix into separate tracks without significant manual work.
