TikTok's built-in save button does work — but it bakes a watermark with the original creator's username and the TikTok logo right onto the video. For most uses that's fine. For some (your own videos you want to repurpose, footage you're editing into a longer piece, content you want to repost across platforms with the creator's permission) it's a problem.
This guide shows how to grab a clean, watermark-free MP4 of any public TikTok video in about 30 seconds, on any device.

The fast version

  1. Open the TikTok video, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open SaveFast.cc in your browser.

Why TikTok adds watermarks in the first place

When you save a video through TikTok's own Share menu, the app fetches a re-encoded version with the username overlay and TikTok logo baked into the pixels. The watermark is part of the video itself — you can't toggle it off, and cropping it usually loses content from the top or bottom of the frame.
TikTok does this to protect creators (it shows whose work it is) and to drive traffic back (the TikTok logo is brand awareness). Both make sense from TikTok's perspective.

Common issues

"Video not found" error. The video was deleted, the account went private, or it was banned. No downloader can retrieve content that's been taken down.
Audio missing. TikTok occasionally strips audio from videos that use unlicensed music. The download will have no sound because the source has no sound. Try downloading audio-only MP3 — sometimes the audio track is preserved separately.
Vertical bars on the sides. That's the original aspect ratio. Most TikToks are 9:16, but some are square or horizontal. The download preserves whatever the creator uploaded.
File quality looks worse than on TikTok. Make sure you picked HD or 1080p, not the default 480p. TikTok also runs a different (heavier) compression pass when displaying in-app, which sometimes paradoxically makes thumbnails look sharper than the actual file.

Privacy and credit

Downloading TikTok videos doesn't notify the creator. There's no view-count impact, no signal in their analytics. The creator never knows you saved their video.
This is exactly why credit matters when you repost. The creator can't enforce attribution if they don't know — so the responsibility falls on you. Practical rules:

  • Reposting to another platform: always credit in the caption (e.g., "Original by @username on TikTok").
  • Using in a video essay or commentary: credit in the description, ideally on-screen too.
  • Using as your own without credit: that's how creators get burned out and stop posting. Don't.

Many TikTokers are fine with reposting if credited. Many aren't. When in doubt, ask in DMs — most creators are happy to be asked.

What about downloading your own TikToks?

If you're the creator, you have every right to download your own work. TikTok's Save button still adds the watermark even to your own videos, which is annoying when you want to crosspost to Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
The workflow most multi-platform creators use:

  1. Upload to TikTok, post.
  2. Wait for the video to process.
  3. Copy the public link.
