How to Download Tumblr Videos and GIFs
Tumblr has been the home of creative misfits, fandom communities, and meme culture for over 15 years. Despite multiple ownership changes and policy shifts, it remains one of the internet's deepest archives of fan art, animated GIFs, and short-form video. The platform's reblog culture inherently encourages sharing — but if you want to save a post as an actual file, you're on your own. Tumblr offers no download button.
This guide covers how to save Tumblr videos and GIFs as real files in 30 seconds.
The fast version
- Open the Tumblr post, copy the URL.
- Open SaveFast.cc.
- Paste, click Download.
- Pick MP4, GIF, or image format depending on the post.
No Tumblr login needed for public posts. Works on every device.
Tumblr URL formats
The URL of a Tumblr post is the post's permalink:
username.tumblr.com/post/123456789/optional-titletumblr.com/username/123456789(newer format on web)at.tumblr.com/abc123def(short share URL from mobile app)
All three work with SaveFast. The first two are the most stable.
Downloading on Desktop
- Open the Tumblr post in your browser.
- Click the timestamp under the post (e.g., "3 days ago") — this opens the post in its dedicated permalink page.
- Copy the URL from the address bar.
- Go to savefast.cc, paste, click Download.
- Pick MP4 for videos, GIF for animated images, or the original image format for photos.
Downloading on iPhone
- In the Tumblr app, tap the share icon under the post → Copy link.
- Open Safari → savefast.cc.
- Paste, Download, pick format.
- Save to Files → optionally move into Photos via Share menu.
Downloading on Android
- Share icon under the Tumblr post → Copy link.
- Open Chrome → savefast.cc.
- Paste, Download.
- File saves to Downloads.
The GIF question
Tumblr is the spiritual home of the modern GIF. Many posts are explicitly GIFs (with the .gif extension) rather than MP4 videos. Tumblr has historically stored them as real animated GIF files, which makes them larger but instantly compatible with any platform that doesn't support video.
When you download a Tumblr GIF through SaveFast:
- For true
.gifposts — you get the original animated GIF file. - For posts displayed as GIFs but actually MP4 (modern Tumblr is moving toward this) — you get an MP4 by default, which is smaller and higher quality.
If you specifically need GIF format for a piece of content that's MP4, use any free online MP4-to-GIF converter after downloading.
Video quality
Tumblr's native video uploader caps at 100 MB per post, which limits length and quality. Available tiers usually:
- 480p / 720p MP4 — most native uploads.
- 1080p MP4 — for posts where the creator uploaded HD.
Many videos posted to Tumblr are embedded from external sources (YouTube, Vimeo, Streamable). For those, SaveFast detects the source platform and offers its tiers.
Audio extraction
For music-themed Tumblr posts (and there's a niche for those), MP3 extraction is on the SaveFast results page. Audio at source bitrate.
Photoset posts
Tumblr photoset posts contain multiple images. SaveFast detects them and offers each as a separate download. Pick which images to save.
One note: Tumblr's older posts sometimes have broken image links (the original file was moved or removed during ownership changes over the years). If a photo doesn't download, the source file may simply be gone.
NSFW content
Tumblr's NSFW situation changed dramatically in 2018 when adult content was banned. Some legacy NSFW content remains (often hidden behind "sensitive content" warnings or community labels). SaveFast handles whatever your browser can view. If Tumblr's settings block the content from you, SaveFast can't access it either.
Reblogs vs original posts
When you copy a reblog URL, you're actually getting a copy of the post that includes someone else's reblog and additions. SaveFast usually finds the media in the original post regardless.
For cleanest results, click through to the original post (Tumblr shows the original poster under the reblog chain) and copy that URL.
Common issues
"Post not found." Deleted, removed during a purge, or moved during account changes. Once gone from Tumblr, it's gone.
Image links broken in old posts. Many pre-2018 Tumblr posts have dead image links due to infrastructure migrations over the years.
"This blog is private/protected." You don't have access. Some Tumblr blogs are password-protected; you need the password from the owner.
GIF file is huge. Real animated GIFs are large by nature. A 5-second 800-pixel GIF can easily be 5-10 MB. MP4 of the same content is 5-10x smaller.
Video plays in Tumblr but won't download. It's probably embedded from an external source (YouTube, Vimeo). Find the original URL and download from there.
Privacy and reuse
Downloads are invisible to Tumblr's analytics. Reblog counts and like counts are unaffected.
Tumblr's culture has always been built around reblogging, screencaps, and remixing — heavy reuse with credit attached to the original chain. When redistributing outside Tumblr, credit the original creator. If a post has clearly identifiable authorship (artist signature, watermark), preserve that.
Your own Tumblr posts — full rights to download and reuse.
Frequently asked questions
Is downloading Tumblr content legal?
For personal use, generally yes. For redistribution, follow standard copyright and credit norms.
Will Tumblr notify the original poster?
No. Downloads bypass analytics.
Can I download from a password-protected Tumblr blog?
Only if you have the password and can view it in your browser.
What about Tumblr's audio posts?
Audio posts (which were once a Tumblr feature) used external hosts. Many are dead links by now; the ones that still work can be downloaded as MP3 through SaveFast.
Does this work with custom Tumblr themes?
Yes — themes affect how Tumblr looks, not where the underlying media is stored.
Can I batch-download an entire Tumblr blog?
One post at a time through SaveFast. Some Tumblr-specific tools attempt full-blog downloads but are increasingly unreliable as Tumblr's structure changes.
