Reddit has a hilariously frustrating video setup. When videos play in the app, they have sound. When you try to share or save them, audio often disappears. When you copy the direct video URL, you get the video without audio because Reddit stores the two as separate files that need to be merged at playback time.
This guide covers how to download Reddit videos with sound properly merged, every time, on any device.

The fast version

  1. Open the Reddit post with the video.
  2. Copy the post URL (from reddit.com/r/... — not the v.redd.it URL).
  3. Open SaveFast.cc, paste, Download.
  4. Pick MP4 — audio and video are merged automatically.

That's the key trick. Always copy the post URL, never the direct video URL. SaveFast handles the audio-video merge that Reddit's own UI doesn't bother with.

Why Reddit videos lose sound

Reddit stores videos using DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), which splits each video into separate streams:

  • One stream for video at each quality level (240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p)
  • One stream for audio

The Reddit player loads both streams and synchronizes them on the fly. When you right-click and "Save video as," you usually only get one stream — the video. Audio is gone.

Downloading on Windows or Mac

  1. Open the Reddit post in any browser. The URL pattern is reddit.com/r/SubredditName/comments/post-id/title/.
  2. Copy that full URL from the address bar.
  3. Go to savefast.cc, paste, click Download.

If you copied a v.redd.it URL by accident, SaveFast still works in most cases — it'll trace back to the original post. But the post URL is more reliable.

Downloading on iPhone

  1. In the Reddit app, find the post with the video.
  2. Tap the share icon under the post → Copy link.
  3. Open Safari → savefast.cc.
  4. Paste, Download, pick quality.

Quality options

Reddit stores videos in multiple tiers. The exact tiers depend on the original upload, but commonly:

  • 1080p HD — when the uploader provided HD.
  • 720p — common middle tier.
  • 480p / 360p — for slow connections.
  • 240p — rarely useful, very low quality.

Pick 1080p if available. Reddit doesn't generate higher tiers than what was uploaded.

GIFs on Reddit

Reddit's "GIFs" come in three flavors:

  1. Native v.redd.it GIFs — silent MP4 files that loop. Download via the post URL like any video.
  2. External Imgur GIFs — actually MP4 or GIF files hosted on Imgur. The post URL still works; SaveFast detects and downloads.
  3. Old-school .gif files — rare on modern Reddit, but they happen. Right-click and save in your browser, or paste the post URL into SaveFast.

NSFW and quarantined content

Reddit gates some content behind age confirmation or login requirements:

  • NSFW posts — visible without login on most subreddits if you've confirmed your age in browser settings.
  • Quarantined subreddits — require explicit opt-in (you have to click "Yes, continue" each time).
  • Private subreddits — only members can see anything.

Common issues

Downloaded video has no sound. You probably pasted a direct v.redd.it URL instead of the post URL. Try again with the reddit.com/r/... link.
"Post not found" error. The post was deleted, the subreddit was banned, or the post was removed by moderators.
Only low quality available. The uploader posted in low quality. Reddit doesn't generate higher tiers from low-quality sources.
Audio is out of sync. Very rare — happens occasionally with very long videos when streams don't perfectly align. Re-downloading usually fixes it.
Reddit shows the video but SaveFast says "unsupported." Some Reddit posts embed videos from external sources (YouTube, Imgur, Streamable, Gfycat archives). SaveFast can usually handle the underlying source — try copying the link of the embedded video directly.

Privacy and reuse

Downloading is invisible to Reddit and to the original poster. Vote counts and view counts (Reddit doesn't show video view counts publicly anyway) are unaffected.
For reuse: Reddit content is widely quoted, screenshotted, and discussed elsewhere on the internet — that's the culture. Crediting the source (subreddit and OP username) when redistributing is basic etiquette.
