Vimeo is the quietly excellent video platform that filmmakers, designers, and serious creators have used for years. Its compression is gentler than YouTube's, its player is cleaner, and creators have far more control over how videos appear. The platform does offer a download button — but only on videos where the creator has explicitly enabled it. Most don't.
This guide covers how to download any publicly viewable Vimeo video as a clean MP4 file, regardless of whether the creator enabled the official download button.

The fast version

  1. Open the Vimeo video, copy the URL from the address bar.

What's different about Vimeo

Three things matter for downloaders:

  1. Vimeo compresses less aggressively than YouTube. A 1080p Vimeo video typically uses 8-15 Mbps; YouTube's equivalent uses 4-6 Mbps. Vimeo files are larger but look noticeably cleaner.
  1. Vimeo Pro accounts can keep original masters. When pros upload, Vimeo stores a high-bitrate "original" file in addition to the standard streaming tiers. Sometimes this is downloadable; sometimes not, depending on settings.
  1. Vimeo supports 4K natively. Many YouTube 4K videos are recompressed; Vimeo's 4K tier is closer to source quality.

This makes Vimeo a favorite for downloading reference footage, behind-the-scenes content, and high-quality short films.

Downloading on Desktop

  1. Open the Vimeo video in your browser. URLs look like vimeo.com/123456789 (numeric ID) or sometimes with a hash like vimeo.com/123456789/abc123def (for password-protected videos).
  2. Copy the URL.
  3. Go to savefast.cc, paste, click Download.
  4. Pick MP4 quality. Vimeo often offers more tiers than YouTube: 360p, 540p, 720p, 1080p, 2K, 4K depending on the source.

Downloading on iPhone

Quality tiers from Vimeo

Vimeo's tier list is more granular than most platforms:

  • 360p — small files, mobile fallback.
  • 540p — older Vimeo standard tier.
  • 720p HD — common middle option.

  • 2K (1440p) — available on Pro and Plus account uploads.
  • 4K (2160p) — available when uploaded by Pro+ accounts.

Pick the highest available tier. Files can be much larger than other platforms — a 5-minute 4K video might be 500 MB to 1 GB. Make sure you have storage.

Audio only

Password-protected videos

Vimeo lets creators password-protect videos. To view a protected video, you need the password. SaveFast handles password-protected URLs in two ways:

  1. Login through Vimeo first. Open Vimeo in your browser, enter the password, watch the video. Then copy the URL and paste into SaveFast — your browser's session token gets passed along.
  1. For private link videos (URLs with a hash like vimeo.com/123456789/abc123def), SaveFast usually handles them directly since the hash is the access token.

Some Pro-tier privacy settings ("Hide from Vimeo, embed-only") prevent direct URL access entirely. In those cases, you'd need to find the embedded version (on the site where it's hosted) and download via that page's URL.

Embedded Vimeo videos on other sites

Many websites embed Vimeo players in articles. To download from an embed:

  1. Right-click the embedded video → Show URL (or Copy embed URL).
  2. Paste into SaveFast.

Alternatively, find the original Vimeo page (often linked from the player) and copy that URL instead. Either approach works.

Common issues

"Video not found" or 404. The video was deleted, made private, or moved. No recovery.
"Sign in to watch this video." Vimeo gates some content behind login. Log into Vimeo in your browser and try the download again.
Only low quality available. The uploader chose to make only specific tiers available, or the original was uploaded at low quality. Vimeo respects creator-set privacy on tier availability.
Download takes a long time. Vimeo files are big, especially 4K. A 10-minute 4K video can be 2-3 GB. Check your internet speed and storage.
File plays but looks like a slideshow. Very rare — happens when video stream and audio stream were combined incorrectly. Re-download to fix.
Caption track missing. Vimeo captions are separate files (VTT format). They're not bundled into the MP4 download. If you need captions, download them separately from the Vimeo player (click the captions menu → "Download caption file" if available).

What about Vimeo's Showcase and OTT content?

Vimeo Showcase is a curated collection format. Videos in showcases download normally if you have access (most are public).
Vimeo OTT (paid streaming services built on Vimeo) is different. Content there is typically DRM-protected for paying subscribers only. SaveFast doesn't bypass DRM — that's a hard technical block.

Privacy and creator wishes

Vimeo creators often choose Vimeo because it gives them more control than YouTube. Many enable downloads explicitly; many specifically don't. If a creator has disabled the official download button, they generally don't want their videos saved locally.
