YouTube has the most extensive music catalog on the internet — official releases, remixes, fan covers, live performances, full albums uploaded by independent artists, and music that's simply not on Spotify or Apple Music. YouTube Music (the dedicated music app) offers offline downloads only with YouTube Music Premium. For everyone else, the audio is locked inside the app.
This guide covers how to extract MP3 audio from any YouTube music video for offline listening.

The fast version

  1. Open the YouTube music video or song.
  2. Copy the URL.
  3. Open SaveFast.cc, paste, click Download.
  4. Pick MP3 instead of video.

You get a clean audio file ready to play in any audio app.

Why MP3 from YouTube makes sense

For music, the video portion is usually irrelevant — you want the sound. MP3 files are roughly 10x smaller than the equivalent video, play on every device, and work with any music player.
Use cases:

  • Building a personal music library from YouTube-exclusive uploads.
  • Saving live performances, covers, and remixes not on streaming services.
  • Creating offline playlists for travel or workouts.
  • Downloading podcasts and interview shows that exist on YouTube as video but work fine as audio.

Downloading on Desktop

  1. Open the YouTube music video on youtube.com/watch?v=... or music.youtube.com/watch?v=....
  2. Copy the URL.
  3. Go to savefast.cc, paste, click Download.
  4. Scroll to the MP3 option in the results.
  5. Click download next to MP3.
  6. File saves to Downloads, ready to play.

Downloading on Mobile

iPhone: YouTube app → Share → Copy link → Safari → SaveFast → paste → MP3 → Save to Files.
Android: YouTube app → Share → Copy link → Chrome → SaveFast → paste → MP3 → file goes to Downloads.
Once saved, the MP3 plays in any audio app (Apple Music for personal files, VLC, Pocket Casts, default music app, etc.).

Audio quality from YouTube

YouTube encodes audio at various bitrates depending on the video:

  • Standard videos: 128 kbps AAC, transcoded by SaveFast to 128 or 192 kbps MP3.
  • Music-prioritized uploads: 192 kbps AAC, transcoded to higher MP3 bitrate.
  • YouTube Premium audio tier: 256 kbps AAC for paying users — accessible if you're logged in as Premium.

For most listening, the standard tier sounds fine for music. Audiophiles will notice the difference compared to streaming services that offer FLAC or 320 kbps.

YouTube Music app vs regular YouTube

YouTube Music is a separate Google product with its own app, but its content is mostly mirrored from YouTube. Tracks accessible at music.youtube.com/watch?v=... are usually also at youtube.com/watch?v=... with the same URL ID.
For downloading, either URL works in SaveFast. The end result is the same MP3 file.

Playlists

For entire YouTube playlists of music, SaveFast handles playlist URLs — see our YouTube playlist guide.
For music specifically, paste the playlist URL and select MP3 for all items.

Album art and metadata

MP3 downloads from SaveFast don't automatically include album art or proper artist/album tags. To organize your library:

  1. After downloading, use any tag editor (Mp3tag for Windows, Kid3 for Mac/Linux, free apps for mobile).
  2. Set artist, album, track number, and embed album art.

For casual listening, the filename is usually enough.

Supporting artists

Downloading from YouTube doesn't pay artists. If you regularly listen to artists you discovered on YouTube:

  • Subscribe to YouTube Music Premium — partial revenue goes to artists.
  • Buy their albums on Bandcamp (see our Bandcamp guide) — best artist support.
  • Add their songs to playlists on Spotify/Apple Music — gives streaming royalties.
  • Buy concert tickets, merch.

Many YouTube-discovered artists are independents who genuinely depend on direct support.

Common issues

"This song is not available for download." Some YouTube content (especially YouTube Premium exclusives) uses DRM. Not downloadable.
MP3 quality lower than expected. YouTube's audio is the source — typically 128 kbps. Can't generate higher quality than the source.
Multiple language tracks confused. Some videos have multiple audio tracks (different language versions). SaveFast picks the default; for specific tracks, try the higher quality MP4 option which often lets you select language.
Album upload as single track. Some uploads have full albums as one 40-minute video. The MP3 download is one big file — you'd need to split it manually with a free audio editor like Audacity.

Privacy and ethical use

Downloads invisible to YouTube and artists.
For commercial use (using in videos, podcasts, etc.), proper music licensing is required. YouTube's Content ID system aggressively detects copyrighted music in uploaded videos.

Frequently asked questions

Is downloading YouTube music legal?
Gray area, region-dependent. For personal listening, enforcement is virtually nonexistent. For commercial reuse, you need proper licensing.
Will YouTube notify the artist?
No. Downloads bypass YouTube's analytics.
Can I download YouTube Music Premium exclusive content?
Only if you're a Premium subscriber and logged in. Even then, some content uses DRM.
What audio quality should I pick?
The highest available — usually 128 kbps or 192 kbps. You can always downsample later, but you can't upsample.
Can I download an entire YouTube playlist at once?
Yes — see our playlist guide.
